During the 2025 Global Game Jam hosted by Chico State University, I had the opportunity to explore and learn the fundamentals of Unreal Engine's Blueprint visual scripting system, which allowed me experiment with the Unreal Physics system.

Project Overview

This project marked my second experience in game development using Unreal Engine, with both experiences occurring during a Game Jam. Learning a game engine under the time constraints and collaborative environment of a Game Jam is a unique and rewarding challenge. During this Game Jam, I was able to quickly prototype a player controller using the Unreal Physics System, enabling basic locomotion inputs and allowing the player to control a Hamster Ball. This hands-on experience not only helped me understand the physics-based movement in Unreal Engine but also pushed me to implement it effectively within a tight timeframe.

Spline System

Given the simple scope we set for the project, we were able to focus on the essentials and leave room for experimenting with additional features. One of my key contributions was the development of a spline system to generate dynamic paths and attach meshes along those paths. This feature proved both challenging and rewarding, as I went through several iterations to perfect the tool. After refining the system, I successfully created a spline tool that allowed the team to design levels more efficiently, adding a unique and flexible feature to the game that enhanced both the development process and the final product.

Level Design

In the final hours of the Jam, I took on the task of designing and building a playable level. I quickly created several models that fit the theme of the level, which helped improve its overall quality and provided players with an engaging environment to explore. The collaborative spirit of the team was key in achieving a cohesive and polished end result, as everyone contributed their expertise in a well-rounded manner. This experience was incredibly rewarding, and the smooth teamwork and creative problem-solving throughout the Jam made the final product something we could all be proud of.
